Top 10 goal by Ronaldo

10. The karate-kid volley
In the 2013-14 season, during a 2-2 draw with Valencia, Angel Di Maria crosses and Ronaldo looks in no position to score but he chops at the ball with an outstretched right boot while twisting in the air and sends it past Diego Alves. Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Jackie Chan would both have been happy with the execution.

9. The title clincher
He was generous enough to talk up Mesut Ozil's part in the build-up for this goal against Barcelona in 2012 and it is some pass from the German, but there is still work to do when he receives the ball. It's the way Ronaldo has got the wrong side of his marker and then with one touch makes an angle before squeezing his shot in at the near post. It won the Clasico and, in effect, the title.

8. The Villa flick
It has not always been about brute force. Ronaldo back-heeled the ball between Martin Laursen's legs and past Scott Carson in Manchester United's 4-0 win over Aston Villa in 2008. It was the ingenuity to even consider it and the technique to get enough power on the flick to get the ball over the line and Sir Alex Ferguson out of his seat in the Old Trafford dug-out.

7. The slam-dunk header
There are a few of these to choose from. Each preceded by cross to the back post and culminating in Ronaldo rising, hanging in the air, and powering the ball past a stranded keeper. The most memorable is perhaps the header that won the 2010 Copa del Rey final against Barcelona. Di Maria crossed and Dani Alves was left literally in Ronaldo's shadow as he climbed above him to head in the winning goal.

6. The Almeria dribble
In the 2009-10 season he tiptoed through the Almeria defence in a 2-1 Madrid victory, dragging defenders one way and then the other before a final step-over and then a shot into the far corner. A reminder that he can float like a butterfly just as well as he can sting like a bee.

5. The long back-heel
This was another flicked goal and from even further out than the Villa one. Rayo Vallecano were the victims in the 2011-12 season. He is almost as far out as the penalty spot but with power and eyes in the back of his head he back-heels the ball past four Rayo defenders and into the far corner.

4. The up and downer against Portsmouth
Players used to need an angle to score from a free-kick. But that was before Ronaldo. He was a long way out and very central when he stuck perhaps his most famous free-kick against Portsmouth in the 2007-08 season but he got the ball up and over the wall and into the top right hand corner.

3. 'Too far for Ronaldo to think about it'
Another free-kick and in an even more important game. Manuel Almunia was beaten by Ronaldo's set-piece in a Champions League semi-final in 2009. But he wasn't the only one who never saw it coming. By the time Clive Tyldesley had finished saying: 'Too far for Ronaldo to think about it' the ball was already in the back of the net.

2. The Howitzer past Helton
Ronaldo had barely left the centre-circle when he let fly past Helton Arruda. The screamer six minutes in to United's Champions League quarter-final against Porto was – like so many of his goals – Ronaldo getting straight to the point. Why pass, dribble or carry the ball forward, when you can just unleash and split the net from all of 40-yards?

1. The bicycle-kick past Buffon
He was 2 metres 23 centimetres off the ground according to Marca when he made contact with the ball and sent it flying past the Juventus keeper – who he has now beaten nine times in the Champions League. This has to be his best goal. There have been a few attempts over the years to score a bicycle kick. Goal number 119 in the Champions League finally produced it. If they ever put a statue of him outside the Bernabeu he will want it to be of scoring this goal.
